I’m not sure when I realized this, but one of the Red Knight’s squires has a stammer. Not a bad one. But he has to pause sometimes to get his speaking and his thinking back into synch.

It wasn’t in his original character sketch. But, as he does more things in Book II, I realize that he’s not described properly in Book I.

It’s a delicate rewrite.

It’s not like he has a speech pattern that’s a profound element of the plot. It’s just a thing, like using a hammer instead of a sword. It’s a nuance that separates a placeholder from a person who’s trying to do the right thing in a confusing, dangerous world.

On the other hand, he’s got a long thing to say about elevating one of the grooms to be a squire. The speech itself becomes one of those side-bar personal struggles that makes the writing fun.
